Frequently Asked Questions!
Can I join Big Easy Roller Derby?
Yes you can! Big Easy Roller Derby is open to all genders and all experience levels for anyone that is 18+ For those under 18, there is a juniors team called the Crescent City Crushers!
If you’re interested in skating we have new skater intakes every fall that are designed to start take you from 0 skating experience to playing derby! Not interested in skating? We have other ways to get involved as a volunteer, ref, non-skating official, and more! See our Derby 101 document for more info!

How much does it cost?
Our dues are $45/month, almost all of which goes towards paying for the rent, utilities, and maintenance of our practice space.
What about gear?
We have loaner gear available for our new skater intakes while you’re deciding if derby is for you! If you decide to stick with it, a new full set of starter gear (skates, helmet, mouthguard, and knee/elbow/wrist pads) will run you about $300-$400, but there are also lots of second-hand gear options on facebook where you might be able to find cheaper!
When are practices?
New skaters can practice on Monday nights and Saturday mornings, advanced skaters practice on Tuesday and Thursday nights.
Are there time commitments other than practices?
We are an entirely volunteer and skater run 501c3, which means we all chip in to keep the league rolling! Skaters are expected to earn four ‘stars’ per month contributing to the league. Stars can be earned for things like taking out the trash, washing practice pinnies, printing or hanging up game flyers, or helping a committee manager with things like graphic design, expense tracking, and a host of other tasks!
Additionally, during the season (March-September) we have about one bout a month, which all league members are required to help put on, quarterly league meetings, and a couple of fundraisers each year.
